Politics for People Who Hate Politics
In today's complex political environment, how can Christians engage without losing their way? This question was at the heart of a recent conversation with Denise Grace Gitsham, the author of the book "Politics for People Who Hate Politics." Denise sat down to discuss how her faith intersects with her political life and provide guidance for Christians who find the political sphere daunting.
What is the premise of your book, “People who Hate Politics”?
This book is about how we are to represent Christ and engage culture. I've spent almost 25 years in politics and now I'm a political commentator on a national cable news network. And every day I strive to live up to the ideal of how Christ calls me to show up as a Christian, first and foremost. And everything else second, including my partisan identity. It's also about how we engage culture with truth and love. We don’t really struggle as much with speaking truth, because God’s Word is clear about the truth. What we struggle with is showing up in the character of Christ as we speak that truth.
We talk a lot at My Faith Votes about Pray, Think, Vote. What do you think are some of those primary things that we can pray for and ask God for?”
Wisdom and courage. It’s the Holy Spirit’s job to convict us of truth. We can speak until we’re blue in the face, but as long as Christians are being over-responsible for changing somebody’s mind, which is a job for the Lord to do, we aren’t focusing on what truly matters. Our job is to show up and speak truth. And we need wisdom and courage to do that.
What do you say about Christians worried about doing the wrong thing or preferring to stay out of politics?
We talk a lot about stewardship in the Church. Stewardship is more than money; it includes our time, resources, and the talent God has given us. As Americans, we have a stewardship responsibility to God for the blessing of being able to shape our country's future by participating in our democratic system.
What is your perspective, as a daughter of immigrants, on the current immigration crisis?
My parents came legally. We saw the consequences for family members who didn’t make it over. Biblically, compassion should not condone illegality. Republicans and Democrats need to approach this issue with understanding and grace rather than using it as a political football. Our solutions should demonstrate good faith and consider the humanitarian crisis at hand while upholding our legal standards.
Denise’s message for Christians is clear: Engage with wisdom, pray for guidance, and always embody Christlike love and humility. Whether through voting or broader civic engagement, it’s essential to reflect our faith in how we navigate the political landscape.
You may not like politics, but politics likes you. Our days of sitting back are over. We have to stand up, or we'll all fall down.

My Faith Votes— is a ministry that motivates, equips, and activates Christians in America to vote in every election, transforming our communities and influencing our nation with biblical truth. An estimated 25 million Christians who are registered to vote, fail to vote in presidential elections. My Faith Votes is on a mission to change this statistic by helping Christians act on their faith and vote in every election. When we pray unceasingly for our nation, think biblically about the issues, and vote consistently in every election the impact of Christians taking action from the local to the state and federal level will be unprecedented.
