Alisa Childers and the Deconstruction of Christianity

In a compelling discussion with Alisa Childers, former band member of ZOEgirl, author and podcaster, Alisa talks to us about her latest co-authored book, “The Deconstructionism of Christianity.” This insightful dialogue reveals the profound effects of deconstructionism on both individuals, the church, and politics.

What is deconstructionism and why do we need to be aware of it?"

“If you ask 10 Christians what deconstruction is, you're going to get like 11 or 12 different answers. Our book tries to connect the deconstruction movement to its history and philosophical roots. Ultimately, we define it as a shift of authority from an external source of authority that's outside of you for truth to the authority of the self. What we see is really a deconversion from the historic Christian faith because those doctrines are seen as toxic and harmful. We trace it back to the garden (Genesis 3). The devil was postmodern before postmodernism was a word."

What is a personal story of deconstructionism and how did it impact you?

My (former) pastor invited me to take part of a smaller group study that he said was kind of going to be like seminary. What I didn’t know then was that he was trying to get his congregation into deconstruction so that he could convert them to progressive Christianity. It propelled me into a faith crisis that was indescribably painful and overwhelming. However, it also led me to study church history, theology, evidence for the existence of God, and the truthfulness of Christianity, ultimately reaffirming my faith."

How do we navigate the intersection between faith and politics, especially regarding deconstructionism?

“Progressive Christians often begin with their political views, and then their theology flows from that. This is in contrast to conservative Christians who start with theology. Both sides see their stances as justice issues, but the danger lies in silencing political opinions under the guise of separating church and state."

Alisa reminds us of the ongoing challenges and transformational changes within Christianity today and the continuous call for Christians to stand on the authority of God’s Word.
