The Most Humble
This week's focus: Humility
When my girls were little, I had to break up a loud argument they were having. I asked them what they were fighting about when my youngest daughter cried, “Mom, tell her I’m the most humble daughter you have.” Before I could say anything, her sister boldly declared, “That’s not true. I’m the humblest in the world!
One deceptive way pride sneaks into our lives is through comparison. We need to check our hearts when we falsely believe we are better than others—especially in humility contests!
Jesus warned us about pride disguised as humility when He contrasted the religious Pharisee with a sorrowful sinner. In Luke 18:11-14, we are told that the Pharisee prayed and exalted himself by comparing his life with that of others. He thanked God that he wasn’t like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers, and especially not like the hated tax collector. On the other hand, the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, “O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.”
The tax collector didn’t compare himself with anyone but confessed his need for God’s mercy. The humble posture of his heart opened the door to God’s forgiveness. Jesus confirmed this when He said, “I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Luke 18:14).
We would be wise to choose humility before we are humbled (pride always comes before a fall). And if we insist on comparing, then let’s compare how our life, both now and for eternity, would be without our Lord Jesus—THE most humble in the world!
