Step by Step
This week's focus: Guidance
If you’ve traveled with kids, you’ll likely hear, “Are we there yet?” Based on the frequency of this question, they must believe their words can speed the journey up. After driving across Texas, I, too, found myself asking the same thing (and no, it didn’t make the trip faster!). At times, life can feel like a long road trip that has us asking similar questions:
When will I arrive?
Am I on the right road?
Can I trust the map?
Did I make a wrong turn?
Am I lost?
God has given His children a reliable map that we can trust. Psalm 119:105 tells us that God’s word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. Most of us wouldn’t request a dimly lit lamp but prefer a vivid spotlight that illuminates the entire way—or so we think. In His wisdom, God understands that we can’t handle everything at once, so He guides us step by step as we journey home.
Having guidance as we go sure beats the alternative we desire. For example, how would you respond if you volunteered to drive a friend to their house and they gave you turn-by-turn instructions all at one time? Most of us would be overwhelmed! Instead, it would be best to ask them to guide you as you go and only tell you to turn when needed. Even if the road is bumpy, uphill, dark, or narrow, you can relax because your friend knows the way. Instead of worrying about getting lost, you can trust your knowledgeable guide, engage in conversation, and enjoy the journey.
The same is true with God. Our relationship with Him grows when we study His “roadmap” and seek His guidance. Worry will take a backseat when we have confidence in the Navigator. Deuteronomy 31:8 elucidates this beautiful truth, “the LORD is the one who is going ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not desert you or abandon you. Do not fear, and do not be dismayed.”
With Him by our side, we can fully trust our knowledgeable guide, engage in conversation, and enjoy the journey (even on dark, scary roads). Why? Because Jesus knows the way, shows the way, goes the way, and is The Way.
