Look Up
This week's focus: The Greatness of God
While watching the news recently, the anchorman ended his broadcast by saying, “From the total solar eclipse in April to the recent displays of the Northern Lights, we have many reasons to look up.” As a Christian, I couldn't agree more.
Throughout scripture, “looking up” is a common theme because God often uses His creation to help guide, lead, announce, warn, and reveal His power. For example, in the Old Testament, the Lord could have led the Israelites through the desert in many ways but chose to use a pillar of fire and a cloud to guide them; they had to look up to see where to go. In the New Testament, after the birth of Jesus, God used a star to guide the wise men; they, too, had to look up to find the long-awaited Messiah they were searching for.
Psalm 19:1 tells us that the heavens declare the glory of God, and the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Romans 1:20 also confirms how God uses His creation to announce His existence. It also warns those disregarding the evidence when we read, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” Creation points us to a powerful and wise Creator who deserves our worship, gratitude, and praise.
Jesus Himself, when He spoke of things to come, told His disciples that before His return, “There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting from fear and the expectation of the things that are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:25-28).
It will be a great celebration for those who wisely chose to “look up” and receive Jesus, the Creator of the whole world, into their hearts. For those who resisted and rejected Him, looking down (in regret, sorrow, and despair) will be their eternal reality. Although not His choice, He will honor theirs.
Knowing this, let us lift our eyes to the One who made heaven and earth and praise Him for graciously giving us many reasons to look up.

Luke 21:28
But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
Prayer Points:
Pray: Dear Jesus, What a powerful Creator You are! Until You return, please help us to proclaim Your salvation so that many will look up and receive You as their Lord and Savior.
Think: “I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how a man could look up into the heavens and say there is no God.” – Abraham Lincoln
Act: Don’t waste another day looking down. Instead, look up to the One who loves you (yes, you) so much that He chose to be lifted on a cross to draw you to Himself.
We want to see God honored in America, and we pray for an unprecedented spiritual awakening.
