Eric Metaxas on Faith, Politics, and the American Church

Eric Metaxas, a renowned author and host of The Eric Metaxas Show, recently joined us for a deep discussion at the National Religious Broadcaster convention. Metaxas passionately urges Christians to step up and fulfill their moral duties, particularly emphasizing the need for political involvement—a call poignantly expressed in his latest film, "Letter to the American Church." Below is an excerpt from their conversation.

Many Christians believe that politics has no place in the church. Can you elaborate on why you think this is a dangerous misconception?

The prevailing notion that Christians should avoid politics is a dangerous fiction. God has called the church to be His voice in the world. We have a moral obligation to speak out against evil—from the pulpit and beyond. This lie that we’re not supposed to get involved politically is exactly how we lose ground to secular and often satanic ideologies. The church's silence only allows evil to prosper.

Your book and film, Letter to the American Church, is specifically addressed to Christians. What motivated you to aim "Letter to the American Church" at this audience?

I wrote this book for Christians because they are uniquely positioned to influence our society. If you call yourself a Christian, it means you are part of God’s solution to the problems in America today. We must confront issues like abortion and other governmental injustices head-on, just as the civil rights movement did. Doing otherwise is tantamount to moral negligence.

Historically, how does the church's current stance compare to the German church during the rise of the Nazis?

The parallels are startling and disturbing. In early 1930s Germany, many pastors chose to remain silent, thinking they were just ‘preaching the gospel.’ They ignored the rising evil, and by the time many saw what was happening, it was too late. Today, American churches are repeating those same mistakes. They’re complicit with the evil they refuse to speak out against.

What is your most urgent message to pastors and churches today?

Pastors need to understand and teach what Scripture truly says about involvement in society. The Bible doesn’t counsel us to remain neutral. In the United States, we have the privilege and responsibility of living in a republic where our actions can influence policies that affect people's lives. If you see policies harming your neighbor and say nothing, you fail in your Christian duty to love your neighbor.

Faith without works is dead. If you believe in the teachings of Christ, you must act against evil. The time for complacency is over. The American church must wake up, or we risk losing our nation and the values we hold dear.

Let’s get people off the sidelines and actively participating in shaping our society for the better. Voting is the minimum we can do, but the implications of our faith stretch far beyond the ballot box.

In a time of great societal challenge, Metaxas’s call to action is clear: Christians must rise and take a stand for righteousness. You can watch the full interview HERE.
