Empowered to Take Action
Sound the alarm! The train has left the station and teeters on the edge of a deep canyon as it speeds down a wobbly track. Our stomachs feel queasy and our palms sweat as we round another bend. Oh no! Fear grips us as we see that the bridge ahead is out! We try to get the attention of the engineer, but we see that he is asleep at the controls. What can we do?
Oh well. Disaster is inevitable. We might as well just go to sleep ourselves and soon it will all be over….
Unfortunately, that seems to be the attitude of many people as we watch our nation thunder out of control down that canyon. Others are aware and just don’t know what to do about it.
So, what is going on, and what can we do?
In order to develop a strategy, we must recognize the source of the problem. The truth is that there are two forces in this world: God and Satan. God is the Supreme Ruler of the universe, but Satan does have a certain amount of power. In 2 Corinthians 4:4, Satan is actually referred to as the “god (small g) of this world,” who “has “blinded the minds of the unbelieving.” We’re riding that train down the canyon in the midst of a spiritual battle.
The Lord has given us weapons to defeat our enemy and our weapons are spiritual, explained in Ephesians 6:11-12. God’s Word provides trustworthy truth versus demonic deception. It’s important to know what God says.
STRATEGY
Our method of defense and attack is PRAYER. It isn’t just the first thing we do, but what we do throughout our battle, encompassing every area of concern.
- “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much” (James 5:16 b).
- “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings, and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
- Pray for repentance and salvation. Jesus is our only real hope for the world. He changes our thinking, attitude, purpose, and destiny. “Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come” (II Corinthians 5:17).
BE INFORMED AND ALERT
Pray for truth. Satan is a liar, and the father of lies (John 8:44). Unfortunately, unbiased truth appears to be lacking in the mainstream media. We need to get acquainted with other news outlets, do research, and know the issues. Pray for wisdom and learn what Scripture says so we can discern the truth. “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously…” (James 1:5 a).
Consider some of the pressing issues facing our culture and our country, where Satan’s lies must be confronted with God’s truth.
Election Integrity: The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (HR 4) that Congress is trying to pass seeks to strip the states of their rights and give the federal government control over all election rules and regulations. Currently, the filibuster, requiring 60 Senate votes to pass legislation, is the only thing preventing the passage of this Act, which would weaken voter I.D. laws and allow unlimited ballot harvesting, among other things. We need election laws that ensure election integrity. Take action on this specific issue at the My Faith Votes Election Integrity Now website.
Immigration: We know that people all over the world are suffering under tyrannical regimes. God wants us to help the poor and needy and He specifically mentions the alien. We do need immigration reform and there are some success stories. But the current “open borders” policy is actually causing a humanitarian crisis, as thousands have flooded across our borders, many dying along the way, families are separated, all the while increasing the flow of drugs across our borders and enabling human and sex trafficking all the more. Pray for God’s solution to this crisis.
Abortion: The truth is, we were all created by God—formed in our mother’s womb and we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Genesis 1 and Psalm 139). God loves life and wants to give us abundant life. Satan hates life and tries to destroy it in every way possible. (John 10:10). Abortion ends the life of a child being formed in his mother’s womb.
On June 8, 2021, members of Congress reintroduced the Women’s Health Protection Act—federal legislation that would codify Roe v. Wade in law and establish the legal right to abortion without limits in all 50 states under federal law, robbing the states of their rights to set their standards on this issue. Pray for protection for the preborn, and for morality and godliness in America.
Gender Identity Confusion and Homosexuality: God created us male and female (Genesis 1:27). He wants us to live holy and righteous lives free from immorality and impurity. Romans 1:18-32 explains that man chose not to honor God, but to live in ungodliness and “suppress the truth in unrighteousness,” exchanging their natural functions for unnatural—men with men and women with women, committing “indecent acts” in their “degrading passions.”
Our world has disregarded God’s design and accepted these practices as normal, and they have expanded “sex” to include 63 to 112 variations of “gender identity.” Christianity is being called “hate speech” if people use the Bible to speak up against homosexuality or any of these forms of gender identity or “sexual preferences” being espoused today. However, I Corinthians 6:9-11 assures us that people can be washed and sanctified from such sins through Christ, so we should never treat them with disrespect or unkindness but speak the truth in love and lift them to the Lord in prayer. Watch My Faith Votes’ powerful interview with Becket Cook on this subject.
Young children are told they can choose what sex they want to be and sex education teaches extreme sexual behaviors as normal, using graphic designs in cartoon illustrations. Congress seeks to pass The Equality Act, which blurs the differences between the sexes, even more, affecting privacy, sports, businesses, and religious freedom, among other things.
Racism: There is one race—the human race. All are equal in God’s eyes—there is no supreme color or nationality. It’s true that racism has existed in America. But race is being used to tear us apart. Critical Race Theory divides people into the oppressors and the oppressed, based on skin color.
RESPOND TO CALLS FOR ACTION AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS
When talking about these and other issues with friends, it’s amazing how many people have only heard media talking points, never critically thinking deeper about the issues at hand. Not everyone does the research and then takes action accordingly.
It’s important as we speak about issues to remember I Peter 3:8-9 “To sum up, let all be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil, or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.”

CONSIDER RUNNING FOR OFFICE
The government cannot save us. Only Christ can do that. But we have responsibilities within every aspect of our lives, including the government, to honor the Lord and His Word. Believers in Christ are often called to work in or through the government to retain freedoms to openly worship the Lord and serve our fellow man. It’s a good calling, just as important as being a pastor or teacher or doctor, as long as it’s God-directed.
It isn’t necessary to run for President, Governor, Senator, or Representative. Smaller offices are extremely significant. Consider your City Council or School Board. Above all, seek the Lord and ask him about how he would have you get involved.
AND DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!
For some reason, churches often seem to think they shouldn’t be involved in politics or host voter registration drives. Yes, our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), but for now, we are sojourners on this earth and particularly in the United States of America. In his book One Vote, My Faith Votes Founding Honorary National Chairman Dr. Ben Carson said, “Separation of church and state does not mean that you must remove your faith from your public life and your voting decisions. Freedom of religion means you are free to speak about and live according to your faith without threats from the government.”
Pray for wisdom when you go to the polls and remember that your vote does make an impact!
BE PREPARED. THE LORD IS COMING BACK FOR US!
What if all attempts to stop that train fail and it plummets into the canyon?
John 3:36 tells us the wrath of God abides on those who have not accepted Jesus’ offer of redemption from sin by His death on the cross, but we who believe in Him have eternal life.
World events are lining up with prophecy. I Peter 4:7 warns us, “The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.”
Believers in Christ all over the world are being persecuted for their faith, and it may come to America. It’s been heart-wrenching to see what is happening to our brothers and sisters in Christ in Afghanistan, Iran, China, and so many other countries around the world. But Jesus warned us of this saying, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation but take courage; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). “And the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:20).
In his book, Twilights Last Gleaming, Dr. Robert Jeffress poignantly says: “The strategy for victory is twofold. God has called and empowered you to stand up and push back against evil and, at the same time, to illuminate the world with the eternal Light of Jesus Christ. As you witness the twilight turning to darkness, the need and the opportunity for you to do both have never been greater. And remember, nighttime never lasts forever.”
