A Biblical Approach to Marriage
Genesis 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
At the forefront of Genesis, we see God’s beautiful design and purpose for human sexuality and human flourishing. We also see that marriage has only one meaning and that is marriage sanctioned by God joins one man and one woman in a single union. As we see in this passage, marriage, as God designed it, has certain traits: 1) Verse 18 reveals that the man and woman complement each other in their gender roles, 2) verse 24 reveals that a man and a woman are joined in a monogamous union and 3) verse 25 shows that the man and woman enjoy the fruits of marriage without shame.
Another purpose for God’s design in marriage was for the husband and wife to pro-create. In Genesis 1:28, God gives the first of several cultural mandates for man and woman and it is to be “fruitful and multiply”. We don’t need much explanation to determine the meaning of this.
What we also know is that in the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus was asked about marriage and divorce, he did not base his response on current cultural norms. Rather, he referred his listeners to the above Genesis creation account.
If this is God’s design for human sexuality, does God prohibit the act of homosexuality? Yes. Homosexuality is a sin, and it is repeatedly condemned in God’s Word. See Genesis 18:20, Leviticus 18:22, 20:13, Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and 1 Timothy 1:10. Despite many LGBTQ advocates who would challenge these scriptures, we can be certain that homosexuality is in direct violation of the creation order.
Sadly, many are succumbing to the pressures of LGBTQ advocates in believing that the Biblical view of marriage is somehow archaic. How did we get here? If you flip over to the next chapter (Genesis 3) the slithering serpent enters the garden of Eden and causes Eve to question God’s word. “Did God really say...?” Satan is seeking to tempt the woman to distrust God—to say, “Well, God doesn’t really know what he’s doing” You see, that is exactly what we are faced with. It is to believe that the Bible has lost its authority and relevance. Satan is using our culture to tell us that God is somehow depriving us of what will make us feel satisfied. It is the cultural mantra of – “You do you.”
If we truly have a high view of Scripture, then we will accept the notion that Scripture is not constrained by eras of time and culture, it is “God-breathed” (2 Tim. 3:16), and Scripture is the final authority on all matters. We don’t get to change His word and we must not fall into the temptation that Satan is still permeating in culture – “did God really say?” Marriage is between one man and one woman. That was the view held by Jesus and the New Testament writers and that must be our continued view.
As a Christian, you do not have the choice to remain indifferent. Meanwhile, secular ideals are invading the church with the false façade of "love is love” and our children are being inundated with claims that same-sex relationships are honoring to God. Don’t forget about the young children that are being shown over-sexualized content in schools. We must stand and act. We must teach this Biblical perspective of sexual ethics to the next generation. We must also be ready to give a defense for the truths of God's word.
There is a God-sized hole in our hearts and same-sex marriage will not fill that void. Sexual deviancy of any kind will not fill that void. The only thing that can fill that void occurs in only one place — at the foot of the cross of Christ. Only through Jesus is where we will find our true, God-given identity. The lie of Satan wants us to believe that we can go beyond the beautiful design of marriage just so we can find satisfaction, but the truth is that true satisfaction is found in our Lord Jesus and his creative order for life.
